Private apartment space (450 sq ft) on the south side of a large 1909 California bungalow that we call a "poor man's Green & Green". It has it's own front & back door & garden space. The bedroom, with a large closet, sleeps 3 comfortably with a queen size bed and a double futon.
The 12x12 living room accommodates an additional 2-4 persons and has a queen size futon and a double futon that fold down for sleeping. If one is sleeping in the living room, one must walk through the bedroom to get to the bathroom. A fan and Hepa air cleaner accompany the air conditioner.
The cookware and tool stocked kitchen has a gas range with oven, refrigerator, microwave, drop leaf round table for 4, blender, electrical water heating pot & coffeemaker. Bathroom is "shipshape", meaning small 5 x 6.5, but the bathtub with shower is 5' long.
Parking off-street on the property for one car is necessary and included in the rental price, due to Pasadena's overnight no-parking 2-6 AM laws.
The garden is a rustic "throw-seed-and-support-the-bees" garden, not a "mow-and blow" manicured yard. We have lettuces, endive, chard and mint instead of a lawn. There are a couple lounge chairs under a Gulf Frittilary butterfly bower. Blood orange, ponderosa lemon, Richardson orange, lime, fig, apricot, peach, pomegranate and feijoa (guava) trees. Popaver poppies and sweet peas March-June. Maracuja passion fruit arbors.
If we are not able to be here to greet you when you arrive, we will send you instructions for entry. There will always be a neighbor to help you with anything. The private entrance is from the backyard, and your car should be parked there 2 AM - 6 AM, so you should load in at the back door. You may use the apartment's front door with access to the apartment's "living room". You are welcome to watch the neighborhood promenade and share a toast from the river rock porch. The south garden sitting area is all your own. We share the backyard round picnic table. You're free to wander the garden.
There is no smoking in the apartment or on the property, as per Pasadena regulations. One must be 25' from any door or window of any other renter or next door neighbor. We suggest a walk on the front sidewalk. Do not bring your cigarette butt back into the house. Throw it in the trash in the driveway before you enter the apartment. If we smell cigarette smoke in the apartment or see butts in the inside apt. trash, we will fine you and take that out of your security deposit.
WiFi is available. No TV, no DVD, no cable, no landline. No audio dock for iPods...yet. There is a good laundry 1 block away and liquor store and dry cleaner in the opposite direction 1 block.
We have a men's bike, and woman's bike (both with required lights for night time), a child's size bike, and helmets for everyone.
The door between our places is bolted from our side. We have outside feral cats. We're not much into pets for your visit...but check with us. We know they are your buddies.
Pasadena's water is continually tested and good straight from the tap, but there is a filtered water pitcher for your use.
Interaction with guests
We live here, on the other side of the house, and can help as much as needed or as much as you'd like. We tend to go about our business, and let you have your private space. Please don't feel neglected if we don't have a mandatory "meet & greet tea time". If I am called away at the time of your arrival, (I'm a singer & a grandma now) I will be in touch with you about a neighbor as your resource.
We have cooked and provided meals before, so let us know if you'd like that additional service. We know a very congenial professional caterer one block away who can work with you for truly memorable service and gourmet meals, so again, let us know and we'll get you in touch. There is a small habachi barbecue with charcoal in the garage. You can also get some at the 99-cent store, less than a block away. We now have a two burner gas grill. If you use the gas grill, please clean it. If you use it, you must do this, if you want a stellar "cleanliness" review.
We have a longtime friend who is a Kung Fu master and wonderful Shiatsu masseuse. He makes house calls. Other guests have appreciated this very much. Please let me know when you make a reservation so that I can forward you a telephone and email contact so that you can get calendars and appointments in synch with him.
Other things to note
There are parrots in the neighborhood. ~Occasionally~, (six days out of the year?) they convene in the camphor trees outside the house, about 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM for a 1/2 hour or so. It's quite an exciting scene to see and hear! However, there are ear plugs in the medicine cabinet in case you'd hoped to sleep through it. If you're a fan of Yellow Headed Amazons in particular, or other conures, this is an ideal birdwatching area.
There are three feral cats in the backyard(s) here. They are afraid of you, so don't feel slighted if they're not very affectionate. The same is true for other nocturnal animals such as possoms, raccoons, and skunks. The latter has never sprayed people in the more than 30 years that I've lived here...even if they are surprised. Usually, they can hear you coming a mile away!
1. Quiet between 10 PM and 9 AM.
2. NO SMOKING , as per City of Pasadena regulations. We will fine you $200 if there is a smell of smoke in the apartment. We will request that Airbnb take that out of your security deposit immediately after you check out.
3. Off street parking for one car included. Please pull all the way up to the left of the garage so that we can open the garage door. You may park on the street with no fees or time restrictions, except between 2 AM-6 AM when the City of Pasadena gives out parking tickets. If you have two cars, please let us know so that we can make plans to accommodate you.
4. If you want to add an overnight guest during your stay, you must let me know in writing in advance (Airbnb messaging is sufficient), at least by 9AM of the same evening's proposed stay. I will approve in writing and alter the reservation. (It's $30 per person). It is imperative that both host and guest take time to approve this amendment of the reservation by 12 noon. If you inform me of your hopes of adding guests during your stay BEFORE you book, we may be able to accommodate them without a fee.
5. Please remove shoes inside. We know this is not always possible due to age and injury, so we know you will take into consideration how the sound carries throughout the house on hardwood floors, and do the best you can.
6. As per clean up before your departure:
a. Trash in wastebaskets is always appreciated.
b. You don't have to make your bed - we'll be stripping it anyway.
c. We'll wash the dishes. Just pile them in the black tub found over the stove. Proper sanitation is very important for the health of the next guest, so you will not be given a bad review if you just leave the dishes in the sink. Again, of course, we'll love it if you do wash the dishes...with soap and HOT water.
7. When you are away from the apartment, you must lock the front screen door, close and lock the large bedroom window, and bolt the back door. Thanks!
A native Pasadenan, daughter of a JPL rocket designer and a professional Girl Scout organizer, I try to be prepared for anything. I thrive in situations of multicultural living and interaction. My husband is a world class arranger of music and "swingmeister", so we travel to concertize. Gigging, gardening and reading are my joys...(Melville, Barbara Kingsolver, Tom Robbins, Roberto Calasso).
Los Angeles is as busy as one makes it, and it's just as easy to kick back here, or jet on into your dream. We love this city! As jazz musicians, our aim is to "make the changes".
