Otranto, Puglia, Italy

Otranto is a remarkable historical town, a fishing centre and a well known holiday resort situated on a pleasant bay in the south of Italy. It is located on the east coast of the Salento peninsula, in Apulia, and is the easternmost city in Italy.

At first Messapian center, then Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Norman and later important Aragonese town, Otranto is spread around the impressive castle built under Alfonso of Aragon between 1485 and 1498 and reinforced by the Spanish in the late XVI Century, and its Romanesque cathedral built under the Norman age and keeping a unique, wonderful mosaic floor (1163-65) .

In 2010 the old town has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For years Otranto has been awarded the Blue Flag Status for its wonderful clean seas.
Its Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot humid summers, the rich and tasty cuisine, shows and cultural events, make Otranto the ideal place to spend interesting and exciting holidays.

For more historical and tourist information see the city council web site.
