About the history
At the mouth of the Steenbergse Vliet – a nature reserve with swaps – is a monumental complex of locks, called Benedensas. The complex dates from 1824 and was established to protect the underlying land for high water. Also, it had the purpose to regulate the differences of the water level between high and low tide. The complex was build right behind a ‘dijk’, or ‘dike’ in English. On this side of the dijk, a wide polder landscape is situated, which is perfect for hiking and offers a great spot for recreation. On the other side of the dijk the beautiful estuary ‘Krammer Volkerak’ can be found. This beautiful landscape full of water again offers a great spot for recreation.

Until 1976 de Steenbergse Vliet was of high importance for the Dutch shipping trade. A great number of suppliers of sugar, sand and gravel, concrete and a distribution center of oil where situated in the nearby town of Roosendaal. All of them had their establishments next to the water and used the canal for the supply and delivery of raw materials and products.

It was in 1976 that the Philips dam was completed and the tide was no longer of influence. As a result, the locks lost their function. Nevertheless, the unique location and the special atmosphere of the lock complex offers enough features to this site to fulfill an important tourist function for the municipality of steenbergen in the future.
