What you'll do

Join an insider's hike in the Lake District that will be safely tuned to conditions on the day and the abilities of the group. This trek, in reasonable weather a classic ridge walk, will reward you with a sense of achievement & world-beating views over lakes & mountains: the inspiration for poets like William Wordsworth. It's a special place & the distance between you & heaven here is a lot less! We will go through route planning, map reading, gear & basic mountain safety. You do need to be fit enough to walk in hilly terrain, have a head for heights & curiosity about your natural landscape. This was once a land of ancient volcanoes and deep glaciers and we'll discover how they have left their mark. Today it’s a place of rocky crags, deep lakes & green valleys. I want to give small groups of people the opportunity to see the terrain through the eyes of someone who is a local but also a professional geologist. You’ll acquire basic skills that will help you begin to satisfy your curiosity about landscapes all around us. We will walk and talk with a purpose! Pick ups from Carlisle, Penrith & Keswick possible. Try another northern England classic hike: Explore Hadrian's landscape

I’m a local, raised in Cumbria, did my degree in Newcastle. I’ve been hiking, running & biking across the north of England for more than 50 years. So I know the hills & valleys of the Lakeland fells intimately but I also understand why they are as they are - their geology. I worked for the British Geological Survey for 38 years, including Cumbria; I retired as a director. I was a science consultant to the BBC for 6 landscape documentaries. I'm a National Trust guide & first aid trained. I am a trustee of 3 northern environmental charities & guide hikes in Northumbrerland & the Lake District

Where you'll be

This trek is in the Lake District, a National Park & World Heritage Site. Our goal will be a ridge walk linking the high fells in the north & centre of the Park. It's a landscape that attracts people of all backgrounds, whether for physical or spiritual motives. We will explore its geological & historical evolution thru sights which most people fail to appreciate but I suspect the emotion you will retain long after is its power to inspire you
