What you'll do

"This experience got 3 stars of 3 by Frommer's Travel Guide"

Salsa music is without a doub part of the Caribbean culture and mainly in Cartagena, lovers of this genre are innumerable. Salsa music as part of our culture in Cartagena, comes from popular neighborhoods. We love listening to salsa music all the time.
This experience will take you to discover some places where We ( locals) come to enjoy dancing salsa . We will visit 3 spots where we will introduce you to our local friends and if possible we may learn to dance with them. As a local, we will teach you how to move your hip and legs. We can't promise you that you will be a professional dancer at the end of the night, but you will have a fun experience that you will never forget. We will be able to experience live salsa music in one or two bars.
Depending of the group I hire a professional dancer sometimes who will also make the night outstanding. By this experience you will also discover the " champeta rhythm" ( A local rhythm that comes from Africa) as well.
Now, Don´t be shy and be ready to dance with locals and like locals.

Maria and her crew were wonderful. Super welcoming, friendly, and full of personality. If you have some experience with salsa, it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local dance scene. If you have no experience, I wouldn’t expect to learn how to fully dance salsa from just one night but nonetheless it’s a good way to force yourself to begin. At first it feels more private then it turns into a night out at bars with people at times watching you. I was shy in the beginning with people watching and all (I lacked salsa experience) but Maria and her crew did a great job to help me loosen up. By the end of the night I somewhat had the basic steps down. I still need a lot practice but it was definitely a fun way to start. Would recommend.

Maria invited a Salsa expert to teach us salsa dance. Although we only stayed in the first few hours of the entire experience (need to catch an early flight the next day), we learned the basics of salsa dance and we felt ready to dance on our own. It was really fun!

First - the ‘host’ is the coordinator and didn’t actually go on the tour. I’m ok with that, just should have been communicated. Jose gave the tour and he was super sweet. Unfortunately tho, the tour wasn’t great. It started with some dance lessons then we moved to another bar which had approximately zero people in it. The tour started too early so the bars/clubs were empty. It got boring. The third stop was a champ eye club with a show. We sat for 20-30min waiting for the show, which wasn’t all that great. Again - I was bored. The last stop was a little better, but still not a crowd. I did get to dance a little which made me happy, but I was getting tired by then from sitting around all night. Again - Jose was great - he did what he could with what he had to work with, but I’d recommend another experience or just go to Donde Fidel in the walled city on your own, and later when there’s actually people there. We did get a beer in each bar tho, so I guess that made it not a total waste of money.

Unfortunately maria was unable to make this tour , but she sent a wonderful replacement in her place - carlos. He started off the night by teaching us ( my wife and I ) basic salsa steps. We then went on to explore few salsa bars in the neighbourhood- each bar had a different vibe and intensity to it. Since it was pretty late at night carlos made sure to accompany us back to our hotel . Had a really wonderful time !
