What you'll do

Visitors will drive to the Appalachian community of Jackson, KY, where we will meet them and provide an initial briefing about the half-day experience. Visitors will travel in the tour guide vehicles. The drive to the top of the mountain is a beautiful winding road.. At the top of the mountain, we go to an overlook with a panoramic view of the mountains and forests. Whenever we see horses, whether in groups of three or fifty, we will stop to look, and get out of the car if possible. We continue down dirt roads, looking for additional herds. After about 2 hours, we head back down the mountain, covering more of the area's history and culture.

Appalachian

This tour is run by the nonprofit Appalachian Horse Project, which manages the free-roaming horse herds in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky.. Our tour guides are local individuals who not only know about these free-roaming horses and have horse backgrounds, but also know the Appalachian culture and history of the area. They have current CPR and First-Aid training.

About the organization

Appalachian Horse Center

The Appalachian Horse Project, established in 2014, cares for the free-roaming horses in the SE Kentucky mountains. We work with Animal Control to pick up horses that are injured, too skinny, or have wandered into residential areas. Our foster farms keep the horses until they are adopted. We provide winter hay, salt blocks, & vet care.. Part of your fees go towards helping pay these expenses.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Appalachian Horse Center.

Where you'll be

You will travel on a 15-mile winding mountain road next to a tumbling creek, to reach the top. Then drive to a high point vista where you can view 360 degree vistas of the mountains. Searching for herds of horses will take us on dirt roads winding through land formerly mined for coal but replanted in grasses and some woodlands.
