What you'll do

THE WATERFRONT Time: 3hrs+ Meet at the Mayflower steps on the Barbican and marvel at the sights: a fortress built as a warning to all Plymothians; the port where infamous voyages began and the largest Aquarium in the UK. Head towards Plymouth Sound on a ferry trip to the iconic Royal William Yard. Imagine how Drake, Darwin or the King of Prussia felt as they sailed from Plymouth; what was life as a labourer like, trawling tonnes of rubble to built the breakwater? Admire John Smeaton’s iconic lighthouse on the Hoe & see Henry VIII’s Artillery Tower nestled amongst the rocks in Firestone Bay. Disembark from your mini voyage & marvel at the Grade 1 listed buildings in the Royal William Yard - the Clarence, the Slaughterhouse, the Brewery & the Cooperage, to name but a few. Enjoy stories of people who have lived and worked here over the past 200 years before enjoying lunch, supper or afternoon tea at one of the many independent cafes or larger restaurants in the Yard. Finish your tour with a stroll across the Hoe (or another voyage back to Barbican) at your leisure.

Jayne

I have lived in Plymouth for 20 years and am proud to call it home. It's a city full of stories, adventures, history & art and the Royal William Yard is one of it's secret jewels. I'm a travel explorer who loves the diversity of Devon and its surrounding counties. As a fully trained and experienced tour guide I have led groups through the whole of the SW of England, whilst my City and Guilds Cooks Certificate feeds into my passion for creating and tasting delicious, locally sourced, fresh food. I qualified as a teacher some 25+ years ago and as a drama teacher I loved finding the stories behind the characters in a play - now I enjoy finding the stories behind the buildings. I can promise a delightful experience exploring the sights and sounds of historic Plymouth that is suitable for all ages and appetites.
